The 2024 United States Presidential Election, stands as one of the most defining moments in American history. It is a reminder that our country is at a crossroads, that our country is divided on which vision of America to accept. One vision of America believes in the work established on by President Joe Biden, which has been arguably one of the most pro-labor presidencies in recent memory, is one in which we invest on those who have lagged behind as well as given Joe Biden’s campaign message in 2020, another tumultuous election cycle, to unite as a country despite our political and to return to a state of calm in the White House. This message contrasts with that of Donald Trump - a politically inexperienced brash and irrational billionaire - who from the moment who walked off the escalator in a building he owns, allowed for a new style of American politics that was entirely unique and inflammatory. A stream of vile, irrational, and incoherent statements, along with lies and disinformation, damaged the political orthodoxy in the 2016 Republican primaries, delighting radical conservative activists and populists. This resonates with America because, according to FiveThirtyEight, Harris leads Trump nationally by 2 points, compared to Biden’s 5 points in 2020. Three crucial states — Nevada, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania — are essentially [50/50](), making the election outcome uncertain. This shows Americans’ indecisiveness about their vision and their willingness to accept one out of hatred for the opposing figure, a level of partisanship and apathy comparable to the pre-Civil War era or the Weimar Republic. However, our institutions are stronger than Weimar, though the resemblance between weakening democratic institutions and the rise of a right-wing elite within them is uncanny. All because of a message that fundamentally resonates with nearly half of the voting public, and demonstrated a rejection of what is believed to be a restrictive, controlling status quo. This was only exacerbated by the economic difficulties of COVID, people are willing to accept a populist message, one that is willing to subvert democratic norms in order to better their lives as for most people who are not necessarily media literate or have in depth knowledge of the workings of Congress, the minutiae and committee meetings that reject more bills than get passed in a single year - as deeply frustrating. It is indicative, to them, that these are institutions made up of out of touch elitists who restrict and control change that could possibly benefit the American people. The belief that these institutions are stagnant, benefiting lobbyists and is fundamentally a malicious bureaucracy. They feel left out of economic growth that didn’t benefit them, as it concentrated towards the richest. Unions were decimated as both parties lost focus on manufacturing and appealed less to labor unions. Rising interest rates and limited housing supply have made homeownership unattainable for many, while rental prices have increased significantly, especially in metro areas.
